Units Scale
  • Main Ingredients:
    • 1 lb (450 g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
    • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
    • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced
  • Marinade:
    • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
    • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • Sauce:
    • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
    • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
    • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
    • 1/4 cup beef broth or water
    • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 2 teaspoons water (slurry)
    • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Optional Garnishes:
    • Chopped green onions
    • Sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Beef:
    • Combine the beef slices with soy sauce and black pepper in a bowl. Let marinate for at least 10 minutes to enhance flavor and tenderize the meat.
  2. Prepare the Sauce:
    • In a small bowl, mix soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, beef broth, and cornstarch slurry. Stir well and set aside.
  3. Cook the Beef:
    • Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a hot wok or skillet. Stir-fry the beef in small batches for 1-2 minutes until just browned. Remove and set aside.
  4. Caramelize the Onions:
    • Add the remaining oil to the wok. Cook the onions over medium heat until softened and slightly golden, about 5 minutes.
  5. Add Aromatics:
    • Stir in garlic and ginger, cooking until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
  6. Combine and Simmer:
    • Return the beef to the wok. Pour the prepared sauce over the mixture. Stir and cook until the sauce thickens and coats the beef and onions, about 2-3 minutes.
  7. Finish with Sesame Oil:
    • Drizzle sesame oil over the stir-fry, mix, and remove from heat.
  8. Serve:
    • Serve hot over steamed jasmine rice or noodles. Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds if desired.
