Description

The French Onion Soup Burger is a gourmet twist on the classic burger, inspired by the comforting flavors of French onion soup. Featuring tender caramelized onions, savory beef patties, and melted Swiss or Gruyère cheese, this burger is ideal for a cozy family dinner or a special burger night.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 4 slices Swiss or Gruyère cheese
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
  • 4 hamburger buns, toasted
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • Optional: 1/4 cup beef broth

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add butter and olive oil, then stir in the sliced onions, sugar, and balsamic vinegar. Cook for about 20 minutes until the onions are caramelized.
  2. Add garlic and thyme to the caramelized onions. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes. If the mixture becomes too dry, add a splash of beef broth. Set aside.
  3. Form the ground beef into 4 patties and season with salt and pepper.
  4. Cook the patties on a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat for about 4 minutes per side for medium-rare.
  5. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty to melt.
  6. Assemble the burgers: Place the cooked patties on the bottom halves of the toasted buns, top with caramelized onions, and close with the top bun. Serve hot.
